In a decisive move to enhance transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s higher education sector, the Federal Government has directed all federal tertiary institutions to immediately publish key institutional data on their official websites.
The directive, issued by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, applies to all Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The move aligns with global best practices in higher education governance and forms part of ongoing reforms in the education sector.
According to a press statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, institutions must upload detailed information on their:
- Annual Budgetary Allocation including a breakdown of personnel costs, overhead costs, and capital expenditure;
- Research Grant Revenue from both domestic and international sources;
- TETFund Allocations for the current calendar year;
- Endowment Fund Value as of the end of the previous year (to be updated quarterly);
- Total Student Population, disaggregated into undergraduate and postgraduate figures.
The Ministry emphasized that the information must be presented in a clear, accessible, and user-friendly format, allowing easy access by students, parents, and the general public.
A deadline of May 31, 2025, has been set for full compliance. The Ministry further disclosed that periodic reviews of institutional websites will be carried out to monitor adherence and that administrative actions will be taken against non-compliant institutions.
“This policy is part of a broader reform initiative aimed at strengthening public trust in the nation’s tertiary institutions, enhancing performance-based funding, and improving Nigeria’s global education indices,” the statement read.
Dr. Alausa urged all heads of tertiary institutions to treat the directive with urgency, stressing that it represents a critical step toward uplifting the integrity and competitiveness of Nigeria’s education system.
This directive comes in the wake of a new report by the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, which revealed how financial secrecy in Nigerian universities affects their ability to access global research funding.
