The Federal Government has formally unveiled and signed the renegotiated 2025 Agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), marking a major step toward ending recurring industrial actions and restoring stability in Nigeria’s public universities.

The agreement was signed in Abuja at a ceremony attended by top government officials, lawmakers, labour leaders and representatives of the academic community.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the deal aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and provides a comprehensive framework for preventing future strikes and ensuring uninterrupted academic calendars.

“For the first time, all critical components required for a functional, competitive and globally relevant university system have been captured in a single, aligned agreement,” Alausa said.

A major highlight of the agreement is a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff emoluments, which will take effect from January 1, 2026, following approval by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

The salary increase will be implemented through the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, which covers research publications, conferences, internet access, professional memberships and books.

Under the new arrangement, professors will receive a Professorial Credit Allowance of ₦1.8 million annually, while readers will earn between ₦840,000 and ₦870,000. Academic allowances have also been restructured and will now be strictly tied to duties performed.

Other stakeholders, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, members of the National Assembly and ASUU leaders, commended the amicable resolution and urged all parties to ensure faithful implementation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Abel Olamuyiwa Enitan, assured that the ministry would fully implement all provisions of the agreement.

The 2025 FG–ASUU Agreement is being widely hailed as a landmark achievement that offers renewed hope for a stable, competitive and globally relevant Nigerian university system.
