The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a strong statement disassociating itself from a purported debate on same-sex marriage, which was allegedly organized by the Creative Africa Initiative.

The Ministry clarified that a forged letter, using its official letterhead, had been circulated by the organization, proposing a debate titled “Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized in Nigeria.”

The Ministry, through a statement released on Saturday and signed by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations, emphasized that the letter was fake.

It noted that the reference number used in the document was linked to the Basic and Secondary Education Department, which had been defunct since June 17, 2021.

Furthermore, the letterhead displayed an outdated reference number, with the font appearing superimposed on old letterhead paper.

The Ministry stressed that the topic of the debate is highly sensitive and contrary to the cultural and religious values upheld by the majority of Nigerians, as well as to existing Nigerian laws.

The statement highlighted the potential for the proposed debate to disrupt public peace and societal norms, leading to unnecessary tension and division.

Additionally, the Ministry confirmed that the 2024 debate, which is still under development by the Senior Secondary Education Department, does not align with the content or schedule mentioned in the forged letter, which erroneously proposed an event in April 2025.
