The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and his Education counterpart, Tahir Mamman, will address the rising electricity tariff issues in Nigerian educational institutions at the upcoming Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria (EWAN) Summit, scheduled for October 23 at the University of Lagos.

The summit will focus on resolving conflicts between educational institutions and power distribution companies, exploring solutions to the electricity crisis affecting Nigeria’s education sector.

In a statement, Christiana Akande and Elizabeth Osayande, representatives of the summit’s planning committee, confirmed that the Power Minister will deliver a keynote address on the theme ‘High Tariffs: Resolving the Electricity Crisis in Nigeria’s Education Institutions’.

The event will feature discussions led by prominent figures, including the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Architect Sonny Echono, who will present a paper titled ‘Refocusing Support for Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions’.

Panelists will include experts from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), among others.

EWAN Chairman, Mojeed Alabi, highlighted the critical nature of the issue, citing massive unpaid electricity bills by institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University and Babcock University. “These crises have escalated to an alarming level, demanding urgent intervention,” Alabi said, urging stakeholders to focus on sustainable solutions for the sector.
