
A tragic incident has shaken the UBE Junior Secondary School Centre in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State, as a 16-year-old student allegedly beat his teacher to death following a dispute over a confiscated school cap.
The student, identified as Friday Ogamude, is said to have attacked 35-year-old Mr Oyibe Oyibe during a confrontation on Thursday, July 10, 2025. The teacher had reportedly seized the cap from Ogamude in May, a disciplinary action that sparked tension between both parties.
According to reports, the altercation turned violent when the student confronted the teacher over the cap. Eyewitnesses say that in the heat of the exchange, Ogamude struck the teacher, who immediately slumped.
Mr Oyibe was rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead by a doctor shortly after arrival.
In response to the incident, law enforcement authorities swiftly arrested the suspect. The Benue State Police Command has condemned the act, describing it as senseless and deeply disturbing.
The body of the deceased has been documented and transferred to the General Hospital, Oju, where an autopsy will be carried out as part of the ongoing investigation.
Speaking on the matter, a police spokesperson confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, and assured the public that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law.
The shocking development has sparked outrage and grief in the local community, with many calling for greater attention to student discipline and school safety.
