Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded a N10 million cash prize to Miss Isioma Nwosu, the overall best-graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session.
Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate, earned the recognition with an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, made the announcement on Thursday during the grand finale of LASU’s 28th convocation ceremony, held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus. He said the gesture was not only a reward for excellence but also an encouragement to other students across tertiary institutions to strive for academic distinction.
In his address, the governor emphasised the importance of education in solving real-life problems and driving sustainable development. “Education is the backbone of our society,” he stated. “We must ensure our educational system remains relevant, innovative and responsive to the needs of the people.”
The convocation ceremony saw the conferment of diplomas and degrees on 11,917 graduates, as well as honorary doctorate degrees on notable Nigerians, including Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Otunba Femi Pedro. Marwa was honoured with a Doctor of Humane Letters, while Pedro received a Doctor of Business. Professor Joseph Olagunju was also conferred with the rank of Distinguished Professor.
Speaking further, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that his administration’s THEMES+ agenda prioritises education and youth empowerment. He cited programmes such as Job Initiative Lagos (JIL), which equips final-year students with employability skills, as examples of the government’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
In her address, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continued support. She highlighted recent milestones, including the accreditation of 43 out of 44 academic programmes and the expansion of postgraduate studies at the Africa Centre of Excellence in STEM Education, which now admits international students.
The Chancellor of LASU, Professor Gbolahan Elias (SAN), urged graduates to become worthy ambassadors of the university, encouraging them to uphold integrity and innovation as they venture into the wider world.
The occasion marked not only a celebration of academic achievement but also a strong message from Lagos State Government that excellence, particularly in education, remains a core value in shaping the future of the state and the nation.
