The Ebonyi State Government has announced plans to rebuild schools that were destroyed during the long-standing conflict between the Abomege and Ishinkwor communities in Onicha Local Government Area.

This development is part of a broader initiative to resolve the century-old dispute and restore peace in the region.

On Wednesday, Governor Francis Nwifuru, through the White Paper Implementation Committee led by the Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Barr. Bernard Odo, met with stakeholders from the Ishinkwor community. This meeting is a precursor to the signing of a peace agreement between the two warring communities scheduled for Friday.

The conflict between Abomege and Ishinkwor has spanned 111 years, primarily over a fertile piece of land, resulting in numerous casualties and the destruction of properties worth billions of Naira.

The White Paper Implementation Committee had previously engaged with stakeholders from Abaomege before their meeting with Ishinkwor representatives.

During the meeting held at the executive chambers of the old Government House in Abakaliki, Odo expressed confidence that a collaborative approach would lead to a permanent resolution of the crisis.

He clarified the committee’s role, stating, “This committee is an implementation committee of the white paper on the Abaomege/Ishinkwor crisis. We are not an alternative dispute resolution committee, nor a fact-finding committee, an appeal court, or a quasi committee. We are an implementation committee.”

Odo also announced the state government’s approval for the rebuilding of Effium Market and Effium High School, both of which were destroyed during the Effium/Ezza Effium crisis in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, a conflict that claimed many lives.

The traditional ruler of Ishinkwor, HRH Jehoshaphat Nnanna, praised the government’s efforts in addressing the long-standing conflict.

He assured the community’s full support for the government’s initiatives aimed at achieving a permanent solution.

The Ebonyi State Government’s commitment to rebuilding destroyed educational facilities and fostering peace highlights its dedication to restoring stability and promoting development within the affected communities.
