The Gombe State Government has approved the release of N682 million to settle outstanding Academic Earned Allowances (AEA) for academic staff at Gombe State University (GSU), in a move aimed at resolving the strike action and reopening the institution.

This announcement was made by Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. Dr. Jatau, who heads the reconciliation committee between the government and university unions, emphasized that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to resuming academic activities.

“The government has allocated close to a billion naira to ensure an agreement is reached for the immediate reopening of the university,” Dr. Jatau stated. Prior to this, N265 million had already been disbursed for promotion arrears, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to resolving the dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In addition to addressing the demands at GSU, the council approved N2.9 billion in counterpart funding for 12 donor agencies and development partners, including:

  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: N300 million
  • Nigerian Solar for Health Projects: N998.5 million
  • ACReSAL Project: N500 million
  • Sustainable Power Supply in Nigeria (SPIN) Project: N500 million
  • SURWASH Programme: N100 million
