Waziri appointed Gashua varsity first female vice-chancellor

The Governing Council of Federal University Gashua in Yobe state has approved the appointment of Professor Maimuna Waziri as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University.

She emerged the third substantive vice chancellor of the university after defeating 47 professors who initially applied for the post.

This was following the fifth Council meeting of the University which held on Saturday, 16th January.

Waziri is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the university.

She will succeed incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Haruna whose tenure will end on 10th February.

According to information made available to journalists, 48 Professors applied for the position, out of which 25 were shortlisted for interaction.

Three candidates made it to the final stage before the Council settled on Waziri.

While congratulating the New Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Mallam Ibrahim Akuyam called on her to ensure she carries all the staff of the institution along.

More about Maimuna Waziri

Professor Waziri became a professor in October 2015 and had held several positions in the past.

The most recent is as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) at the university.

She is the second indigenous female Professor in the history of Yobe state.

She had previously served as the Dean of the faculty of Science of the University,

Born in 1966 at Gashua town in Bade local government area, Waziri started her academic career at the University of Maiduguri as a Graduate Assistant in 1987 shortly after her graduation from Bayero University Kano, where she bagged her bachelors degree in Chemistry in 1986.

Thereafter, she proceeded for her Master’s degree at the University of Ibadan where she obtained a master’s degree in Physical Chemistry in 1990.

She obtained her PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry from University of Maiduguri, in 2006.

She continued with her lecturing career with the department of Chemistry, University of Maiduguri where she rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

In 1997, she served her State as a Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and later Commissioner for Commerce and Industries from 1998 to 1999.

She also served as a Special Assistant to the Executive Governor of Yobe State on Industrial Development between 1999 and 2001 and Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Damaturu from 2001 to 2007.

Waziri was part of the Team saddled with the responsibility of establishing Yobe State University.

When the University took off in 2007, she joined as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and at the same time appointed the Director, School of Basic and Remedial studies as well as the Dean, Faculty of Science from 2007 to 2009.

She is a recipient of a number of awards which include; The Michael Collins Memorial Prize for the best 1st year Physical Chemistry student in BUK in 1984, the Michael Collins Memorial Prize for the best graduating Chemistry student in BUK in 1986, Who is Who in Science and Technical Education in Africa (1997) amongst others.

She is also a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria and member of many professional bodies, among which are the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, American Biographical Institute of international Research and The Third World Organization for Women in Science.

She is dedicated to learning, research and teaching and has served in various capacities at the University of Maiduguri and Bukar Abba Ibrahim University, now Yobe State University Damaturu, befor joining the services of the Federal University Gashua.
