The Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Adaobi Obasi, has come under greater scrutiny in her administration of the state institution’s fortune following the alleged involvement of her son in a school fees collection contract with the school.

This is part of the discoveries of the visitation panel set up by the state government examining the state of affairs in the institution.

The discovery was disclosed by the state government in a statement released to the journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Oguwuike Nwachukwu, after its weekly State Executive council Meeting on Wednesday.

The government has since stopped the said firm from handling such a contract as it violates the procurement act.

According to the statement, “Government also discovered that a company called Tenssy Professional Services which collects school fees for the university is also owned by the son of the Vice-Chancellor, and that the same consultant collects fees from other tertiary institutions in Imo State. Council, therefore, decided that the company should seize forthwith from collection of fees for Imo State University and any other tertiary institutions in Imo State”.

Furthermore, the council is said to have frowned at the inability of the University to pay the February salaries of her staff even with the January and february subvention that were made available by the state government and directs that the supervisory Commissioner issue querry to the vice Chancellor.

“It, however, frowned at a situation where the university could not pay workers their February salary after government had released January and February subventions to the university authority. To this effect, government has directed the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ikegwuoha to issue a query to the Vice Chancellor of the University on why she could not pay when the money had been released to her”.

Meanwhile, the state government while acknowledging that the staff of the University has been paid salaries up to May, 2020 despite alleged “monumental revenue leakages”, assuredthe public that the committee working on the White paper would soon make it public.

Recall that University’s visitation panel headed by a former Vice Chancellor at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Professor Chinedu Nebo had earlier submitted its findings to Governor Hope Uzodinma.
