UNILORIN wins African debate championship in Ghana

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has won the maiden edition of an African debate championship called the Genesis Debate Tournament.

It was held in Accra, Ghana, between 4th and 7th January, 2018.

EduCeleb.com gathered that participants in the international event were drawn from different universities in Nigeria, Ghana and Mauritius.

Among the participants were a varying number of both undergraduate and postgraduate students from the universities.

Universities that participated in the tournament are the University of Ghana, Legon, the Covenant University, Otta, the University of Lagos, the Zenith University College, Accra, the Federal University of Technology (FUTA) Akure, the Islamic University College, Accra and the University of Calabar.

Others are the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Accra, the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, the University of Ilorin, the Africa Leadership University, Mauritius and the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

The final round of the championship held on Sunday was contested by the debate teams from University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology, University of Calabar, Ghana Law School, Mokola, Africa Leadership University, Mauritius and the University of Ilorin.

In the Opening Government, Jessica Amoor of the University of Ghana and Esinam Osei-Bonsu from Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology, faced each other, while in the Opening Opposition, Faithfulness Okom of the University of Calabar and Derrick Ackah from Ghana Law school, Mokola slugged it out.

For the Closing Government, Richard Adu-Poku from the Africa Leadership University, Mauritius and Omotayo Jimoh of University of Ilorin confronted each other, while in the Closing Opposition, Hawau Abikan and David Ejim, both of UNILORIN trade tackles.

At the end of the thrilling contest, the UNILORIN team emerged champions and was presented with a trophy.

The UNILORIN debate team was also awarded 3 of the top 10 speakers medals, the best female debater award, the Second best judge medal won by Abolarin Mohammed and a student of the university, Adekunbi Ademola, served as the Co-Chief Adjudicator of the competition.

Members of the winning team have expressed their appreciation to the University management and the Students Affairs unit for the support given to them and privilege to represent the school at the competition.
