UNILAG TV debutes on StarTimes today

The University of Lagos Television (UNILAG TV) on Thursday, 17th January made its debut broadcast on StarTimes.

Users of the cable network platform can now watch programmes on this first university television station in West Africa on StarTimes Channel 184.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Toyin Ogundipe, assured the public that the television station would see to the education, information and entertainment of students and the people of Lagos State through relevant programmes.

He said, “We are pleased to blaze the trail by establishing the first campus TV in Nigeria and West Africa.

“UNILAG TV will fly on the platform of StarTimes Digital Broadcasting Channel 184. It will serve as a reference point in sports, documentaries, quality entertainment and an instrument of educational advancement.

“There will be a time belt for distance learning students. Before the end of the year, we want to merge the activities of students in the arts, social sciences and science to generate quality content.”

Professor Ogundipe while speaking at a press briefing ahead of the maiden broadcast hoped that the TV station would improve the university’s international ranking, and serve as a platform to showcase the students’ potential and talents.

EduCeleb.com recalls that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) granted the UNILAG TV licence in November, 2017. That was about thirteen years after the university also launched the first university campus radio station in Nigeria back in 2004.

Also speaking at the event, the UNILAG Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Wale Babalakin, urged the university’s TV management to make it a source of outstanding intellectual discourse, accurate news and solutions to societal problems.

He said, “I hope this station will be the centre of very interesting discussions. I am hoping that it will be a centre of correct and accurate news and will begin the end of fake news in Nigeria.

“We are hoping that it will bring back the vibrancy of intellectual discourse and become a great centre. I really look forward to you providing what is missing today.

“A lot of TV stations have done very well, but I believe there is room for a TV station that will acquire the reputation of being a source of the most outstanding intellectual discourse. I want UNILAG TV to always bring together the leaders of opinion, the most resourceful people and the most intellectual people in every area to discuss issues.”

On his part, the Chairman, UNILAG Multimedia Ventures Limited, which manages the TV station, Professor Muyiwa Falaye, said the UNILAG TV is projecting to generate 60 per cent of its production contents. He also hoped that the station would be contributing to the internally generated revenue of the institution.
