UNILAG suspends lecturer caught in sexual assault video

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has suspended a senior lecturer who was involved in a sexual assault scandal.

Dr Boniface Igbeneghu who is of the Department of European Languages and Integrated Studies at UNILAG got exposed in a video by BBC Africa where an undercover journalist, Kiki Mordi, disguised as a 17-year-old admission seeker.

The vice-chancellor of the institution, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said the lecturer has been suspended “indefinitely”.

He also said that an investigation would be launched into the controversy.

As a result, the spokesperson of the institution, Taiwo Oloyede added that Igbeneghu was barred from the academic areas of the university until he is invited by a Panel constituted by the university to investigate the matter.

She also said that “cold room” referred to in the video located at the Senior Staff Club had been shut down.

In the meantime, the management at its meeting promised to decisively deal with any other lecturer implicated in a fuller version of the video documentary to be release Monday evening.

“The University is embarrassed and dissociates itself totally from this act(s) and any inappropriate behaviour of staff with female students and vice versa,” Mrs Oloyede said.

The University has a well-articulated “Policy on Sexual Harassment, Sexual and Romantic Relationships”. A copy of the University Sexual Harassment Policy was distributed to all members of staff and can also be obtained on the University website.

“Various Committees over time have been set up to investigate reports received and those found guilty/culpable were sanctioned.”

“To ensure our students are aware of the various opportunities for reporting any form of sexual harassment or misconduct towards them, the University organises an orientation programme for all new entrants sensitising them of the University’s zero-tolerance policy and acquainting them with the mechanisms for reporting.”

EduCeleb.com earlier reported that Dr Igbeneghu who is also a senior pastor at Foursquare Gospel Church in Lagos has been asked to step down by the church following the scandal.

The Church dissociated itself from his action while saying that it would conduct internal investigations into it too.
