UNILAG: ‘Sacked’ VC resumes office, despite appointment of Acting VC

The embattled Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe on Thursday returned to his office amidst cheers from members of staff.

He was earlier was sacked by the UNILAG governing council over alleged gross misconduct among other offences, the allegations he has sinced denied.

This development comes same day the council announced Professor Omololu Soyombo as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG.

Professor Ogundipe’s removal was announced in a statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the senate of the institution passed a vote of confidence in Professor Ogundipe but passed a vote of no confidence in the pro chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin.

The decision was reached at an emergency meeting chaired by Professor Chioma Agomo on Thursday.

This development adds another twist to the ongoing controversy over the management of the university.

It was expected that Soyombo would immediately assume his role in office following the announcement but he was not sighted around the Senate building while it opened officially.

A statement by the Registrar/Secretary to the Council, Oladejo Azeez, said the Council made the appointment at a meeting held in the early hours of Thursday in Abuja.

The statement urged the public to disregard the claim by Professor Ogundipe that he remains the substantive Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG.
