A non-academic member of staff at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Sunday Meshioye has committed suicide.

Until his demise, Mr Meshioye was a Transport Supervisor attached to the school’s Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Persons familiar with the circumstances surrounding his death said the 36 year old ingested a poisonuous substance a day after facing the university investigative panel over a bus that recently got burnt in his care.

He was reportedly rushed to the UNILAG Medical Centre on Tuesday, 10th September, 2019, where first aid treatment was administered on him before being conveyed in an ambulance to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba.

He later died on Wednesday, 11th September from complications related to that.

The UNILAG management has confirmed the incident.

In an interview with EduCeleb.com, the Vice-Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe on behalf of the university community commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss.

In a condolence message through the university’s spokesperson, Mrs Taiwo Oloyede, he revealed that Meshioye, before his unfortunate demise, had been scheduled for a session with the Counselling Unit of the University, after reported cases of attempted suicide.
