UNIBEN student raped, murdered at church

A 100 level student at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Vera Omozuwa was on Friday, 29th May reportedly raped while at a church to read.

She later died Saturday evening from injuries sustained from rape.

Omozuwa was of the Faculty of Life Sciences where she studies Microbiology, at the institution.

The 22-year-old victim was said to have been at her church, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ohovbe road branch in Benin City where the incident happened.

The deceased had usually visited the place to read, in preparation for the lifting of the Coronavirus influenced shutdown of schools.

The perpetrators were said to have attacked her, raped and smashed her head with a fire extinguisher, leaving her for dead.

She was later transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where she battled for her dear life at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

She, however, died around midnight on Saturday, 30th May, following excess loss of blood and deep cuts sustained from the attack.

A family source, who confirmed the development, described the deceased as “an easy-going somebody (sic).” Her remains had been deposited at the morgue.

Nigerians have since taken to Twitter, using #JusticeForUwa, to demand for justice for the fallen student and one of the numerous victims of rape in the country.

UNIBEN condemns incident

The management of UNIBEN has decried the news of the rape and subsequent murder of Ms Omozuwa.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Lilian Salami, in a statement through the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, described the news as shocking.

In the statement made available to journalists on Sunday in Benin, the VC said the actions were condemnable and should not be condoned by any society.

She said the current COVID-19 pandemic was already hard on everyone and that compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family was a wicked act.

While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their daughter, Mrs Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest.

The vice-chancellor urged students of the institution and indeed all young people to be wary of the company they kept and the places they visited.

Meanwhile, a delegation had been sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.
