UMYU creates Abuja presence to attract international students

Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina state has established a contact centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital to attract foreign students into the university.

Similarly, the university said it had introduced marketable courses for deserving indigent students to enhance knowledge amongst them.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Sunusi Mamman made this assertion during the foundation laying ceremony of the residential staff quarters by Governor Aminu Bello Masari at the University premises in Katsina.

Mamman said the establishment of the university presence in Abuja was to assist foreign students access information on it’s activities to get admission and support from other countries.

According to him, with the approval of the university Governing Council plans are in the pipeline to promote excellence in teaching, learning and research to enhance service delivery.

“With our experts in the College of Basic Science, we are currently researching on local herbs for the treatment of High blood pressure, diabetes, Kidney and Hepatitis”.

“If we are successful, we will patent the drugs to address such major ailments with a view to enhance the lives of people in Katsina state and Nigeria in general”, he said.

On corporate social responsibility, he said the university has introduced free medical outreach and counseling services to the host community and supplied drugs to them for minor ailments such as malaria, typhoid and common cold amongst others.

The Vice Chancellor however appreciated the committed efforts and support of the staff to the progress of the university to ensure the dreams of making the institution one of the top ten universities in the country.

He also appealed to the state government to assist the university with required resources to enable it succeed during the forthcoming accreditation exercise next month.

On the re-opening of the university, Mamman said negotiations are ongoing with the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on their return to the classroom.
