The University of Ibadan management has on Saturday ordered medical students in Alexander Brown Hall out of their residence indefinitely.

This order which came through the Academic Board of College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, also included the immediate closure of the Hall until further notice.

UI Registrar, Olujimi Olukoya, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Saturday.

EduCeleb.com recalls that students resident in the Alexander Brown Hall had on 6th April, staged a protest over the increment in the school and accommodation accommodation fees as approved by the senate.

The UI management had during the week announced a new fee regime that would see medical students pay over 300% more of what they were hitherto paying as at 2017.

The students told EduCeleb.com that their school fees used to be N33,650 in total but is now 129,650 following the addition of “professional fee” at N100,000 and the deduction of N10,000 as against previous year’s fees.

Also, the accommodation fee which was N14,000 had got increased to N40,000.

A student who pleaded anonymity expressed fears that the increments could make students drop out of medical school. Another insinuated that there are still plans to increase the fees again soon.

Students’ reaction to the increments led the academic board deciding to close the hall of residence, which ordinarily houses the prospective medical practitioners all year round.

Mr Olukoya said the board in the meeting considered the situation report with respect to students’ agitation, regarding an upward review of the professional training and accommodation fees as approved by the senate.

“In view of the security threat that the students’ action may pose, the board, therefore, recommended an immediate closure of the Alexander Brown Hall until further notice with a review of the situation in two weeks.

“Consequently, the vice-chancellor, on behalf of senate has approved the recommendation of the Academic Board of the College.

“Students resident in the Alexander Brown Hall are, therefore, directed to vacate the hall on or before 12noon of Saturday, 7 April, 2018,” the statement read.
