The management of Bowen University, Iwo in Osun State has said the university decided to sack about 10 per cent of its workforce to stay afloat.

It was gathered that over 100 members of staff were given the sack on Tuesday and this is generating tension on the campus.

But the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Toba Adaramola, told journalists that technology had taken over the jobs of most of those disengaged by the varsity.

He said it would be economically unwise for the university to invest in technology and still be paying so many workers for the jobs being done by computer.

He said, “It is a fact that the institution asked some members of staff to go. About eight to 10 per cent of the workforce was laid off.

“This affected those in academics and the non-academic staff. In August 2018, it was discovered that the university was heading toward a change.

“The management deliberated on the reasons for this and they identified three things which is a change of culture and among others.

“We changed the system to the one that encourages technology and you will agree with me that this is the way to run businesses and institutions especially now.

“Technology can take care of the work of most of the members of staff that were sacked. So it is a way of sustaining the university so that it can be vibrant and maintain its status. “

He debunked the allegations of insensitivity and extravagance leveled against management led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joshua Ogunwole.
