A lone suicide bomber has on Monday evening launched an attack on the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

The attack reportedly took place around 7:50pm near one of the female hostels in the university.

With the intervention of security operatives, the attacker was neutralised while trying to sneak into the university’s premises.

He was identified as a thirteen year old boy. The boy was the only fatality recorded in the said attack.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack but it is suspected that members of the Boko Haram terrorist group were behind it.

The insurgents have carried out a series of attacks on UNIMAID in the past.

EduCeleb.com recalls that an attack by the insurgents on the university campus in January 2017 led to the death of four people, including an infant and a professor.

It released three UNIMAID lecturers abducted last July about two weeks ago. The lecturers who were a part of a geological team. During their abduction, 69 people were killed.

Between then and now, the institution had recorded not less than five attacks from Boko Haram.

Last year, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at UNIMAID, Dani Mamman, said at least 70 lecturers had resigned from the university since 2009 owing to the Boko Haram insurgency.
