Student kidnaps sister, demands N10m ransom from parents

A 200 level student at Moddibo Adama University of Technology, Yola has been arrested for kidnapping his sister.

22-year-old AbdulBasit Umar, according to the Nigeria Police in Taraba State, was arrested along with his accomplices in connection to the alleged kidnap.

The suspects were tracked down after collecting N4million ransom for the release of the girl after the parents said they could not afford the N10 million initially demanded.

Another student arrested in connection to the crime is Abdullahi Habib, a 21 year-old student at Adamawa state University, Mubi.

The Police Public Relation officer, Taraba command, David Misal, who paraded the suspects along with 19 other suspected kidnappers and armed robbers, said Mr Umar and his accomplices were tracked when they were collecting the N4million ransom at a location in Jalingo.

He added that the duo with one Sadiq Dalhatu, a 27 year- old, had lured the girl into a saloon car with registration number MKF 67 JK Kaduna and taken her to Dove Hotel at Mayo Dassa in Jalingo where they held her captive.

Mr Misal explained that the suspects later called the parents of the girl and demanded N10 million ransom but the amount was negotiated to N4 million.

He revealed however that the phone number the suspects were using in demanding the ransom was tracked leading to their arrest when they were collecting the ransom.

The key suspect and biological brother of Amina Umar, AbdulBasit Umar told journalists that his intention was to use the ransom to travel abroad.
