Soldier who allegedly raped student dismissed, to face prosecution

The authorities of the Nigerian Army have dismissed a soldier who allegedly raped a female student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

Following that, he was handed over to the Ondo State Police Command for prosecution.

The incident leading to the latest situation occured last week Wednesday when some soldiers at a military checkpoint along Ikare-Akungba Akoko road allegedly sexually assaulted the student belonging to the Department of Religous and African Studies of the university.

EduCeleb.com reported earlier that Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had called for the prosecution of the suspects by the police. This development is partly seen as acceeding to that request.

The soldiers involved in the nefarious act belong to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the army.

Commander of the brigade, Zakari Abubakar had said earlier that the military was investigating the incident.

At the end, it found only one of the soldiers on duty named Lance Corporal Sunday Adelola to have committed the offence.

It was learnt that earlier before handing over of the case to the police, the suspect, who was identified as Lance Corporal Sunday Adelola, has been dismissed from the service by the army.

Abubakar, while speaking with journalists said justice would be would done on the matter, saying the army would try the suspect internally and if found guilty, the suspect’s uniform would be removed after which he would be transferred to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the development and said the suspect would soon be charged to court.
