Six Covenant University researchers get patent for eight products

Six researchers at Covenant University, Ota have been granted patent rights for eight products.

This feat had one of them and Head of Product Development Cluster in the school, James Omoleye, becoming a sole recipient of one of the patent rights and a co-recipient of four others.

A patent is a government licence conferring a sole right to an inventor to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention right or title for a set period in exchange for detailed public disclosure of the invention.

EduCeleb.com gathered that the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) facilitated the award of patent rights to the Covenant University researchers mostly dated October 2017.

NOTAP is an agency under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. Among its functions include, promoting innovation, patenting intellectual property; offering technology advisory and supporting services; and the commercialisation of Research and Development results.

Professor Omoleye who is of the Chemical Engineering department at Covenant emerged the sole beneficiary of the patent for the ‘Production of wine Brand from Hibiscus Sabdariffa’.

He and Dr Modupe Ojewumi, of the Department of Chemical Engineering, were joint recipients of the patent right for the ‘Production of Protein Nutrient from Parkia Biglobosa Seed’.

The patent right for ‘Integrated Dual Powered Electric Automobile Engine’ was awarded to Professor Omoleye and Olusegun Igbamerun. Mr Igbamerun is a Senior Technologist at the Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation, and Discovery (CUCRID).

The duo were also jointly awarded the patent right for the invention of ‘Violation Self Reporting Vehicle Speed Limiter’.

Also, together with Mr Ifeanyichukwu Ekem, Professor Omoleye earned a patent right for the ‘Production of Dry Fermented Ogi from Corn and Guinea Corn’.

Professor Francis Idachaba of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) was awarded patent rights for two products. They are ‘Pipeline Leak Inhibitor Tool for Onshore and Offshore Crude Oil Pipeline networks’ and ‘Offshore Pipeline Monitoring Tool’.

His colleague in the same department, Dr Victor Matthews, received a patent right for the invention of an ‘Intelligent Executive Chair’.

Covenant University is a faith-based private university in Nigeria founded in 2002 by Living Faith Church Worldwide.

Over the years, the tertiary institution has continued to blaze the trail in terms of annual rankings from various organisations, scholarly citations from reputable journals and innovative researches.

The founders of the university envision it becoming among the top twenty universities in the world by 2022.
