Rochas Okorocha gives AAUA best graduating student N500,000 for lunch

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has given the Best Graduating Student at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Awe Fredrick Oluwatimilehin a N500,000 cash gift for lunch.

He did so at the combined 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 session Convocation Ceremonies of the institution held at the Multipurpose Hall on the main campus in Akungba Akoko on Saturday.

EduCeleb.com reports that Mr Awe had graduated from the Department of Physics Electronics with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.83.

In an emotion laden speech to thank the audience on behalf of other graduands, Awe narrated how he was kidnapped by ritualists for three days and his mother’s support despite the abandonment of him and his siblings for over twenty years by their father.

He noted that in spite of these and more, he was determined to make it. This actually paid off as he emerged the best among equals.

Mr Okorocha, who was among dignitaries present at the occasion, was very impressed by the story of Mr Awe.

“I would have like to take you out for lunch. But for my time, however, please kindly accept N500,000 for your lunch,” Okorocha said.

“Stand with me. I love to identify with greatness. Blessed is the womb of your mother,” he added.

EduCeleb.com gathered that the Governor thereafter brought out five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) cash and handed it over to Awe. This was received by the audience with a rousing clap as some shed tears of joy.

The ceremony culminated in the conferment of First Degrees, Postgraduate Degrees, Honorary Degrees and Presentation of Prizes. It was also marked with the commissioning of the university’s radio station, Radio AAUA 90.3FM.

The Imo State governor was among those honoured with a Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by the AAUA at the event.

Other honourees were the Chairman, Premier Lotto Nigeria Limited, Kesington Adebutu, and philanthropist and engineer, Julius Ajibulu. Mr Adebutu was conferred with the Doctor of Business Finance (Honoris Causa), while Mr Ajibulu, got conferred with the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).

The event was witnessed by the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the University, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, members of the State Executive Council, principal officers of the AAUA led by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, Vice Chancellors of various universities, among others.

The Graduates

In his speech, Professor Ajibefun announced that 9,812 graduates were receiving their awards of which 7,786 belonged to the 2014/2015 session while 2,026 were of the 2015/2016 session.

He stated of the 7,624 that earned First Degree in the 2014/2015 session, 29 graduated with First Class Honours, 1,316 bagged Second Class Upper Division, 5,183 earned Second Class Lower Division, 1,027 had Third Class Honours while 69 got Pass Degree.

He added that of the 2,026 that graduated in the 2015/2016 session, 21 earned First Class, 609 graduated in Second Class Upper Division, 1,151 bagged Second Class Lower Division, 239 got Third Class while six had Pass Degree.

“In the postgraduate category, 16 bagged Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.; 128 earned Master’s degree while 18 had Postgraduate Diploma in Education, PGDE,” Ajibefun said.
