Rivers State wins Lafarge literacy competition

The Rivers State representatives have won in the 2019 edition of the Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition.

Emmanuela David and Prosper Barikpoa, both of Pupils’ Community Primary School, Pue in Khana Local Government of Rivers impressed judges and the audience to take the first position.

They were followed by the representatives of Ogun State, which came in 2nd position, and Enugu that was 3rd.

The grand finale of the literacy contest now in its 6th edition took place at Oriental Hotel in Lagos on Thursday, 7th November.

It featured spelling and writing competitions among contenders who emerged after regional finals across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

EduCeleb.com gathered that more than 16,000 pupils partook in the competition prior to the finale.

In his welcome message, chairman of Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr Mobolaji Balogun expressed his delight at the successes recorded over the years and he reiterated that Lafarge Africa will continue to help tackle the issue of illiteracy in the country.

“We are at Lafarge Africa understand that the government cannot do it all by themselves, at the same time, we recognise the importance of education and the need to close the illiteracy gap in Nigeria, that is why the Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition is very important to us,” he said.

Managing Director and Chief Executive of Lafarge Africa, Michel Puchercos on his part hinged the competition on the company’s overall sustainable development strategy on four cornerstones, which are climate, circular economy, water and nature, and people and communities.

“The Lafarge Africa National Literary Competition fall in the “people and communities” pillar of our sustainable development strategy and that is why we have put in so much into this competition to grow the future minds of this country,” he stated.

Winners went home with various prizes at the end of the contest.
