Reps member gifts textbooks, lab tools to students

A member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Mainland Federal Constituency, Olajide Jimoh has gifted mobile laboratory tools to a student at Herbert Macaulay Girls Senior High School, Miss Adeshina Abimbola for identifying his constituency office in Lagos.

The lawmaker gave out the tools to the student at a day academic counselling and interactive session he organised for senior secondary school students in Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.

Hon. Jimoh, while presenting the science laboratory tools charged the students to know their lawmakers and where their offices are situated.

The lawmaker, who expressed joy over the performance of Abimbola stressed that education is about knowledge, service and leadership, adding that every opportunity should be judiciously used by the students.

He also distributed textbooks to the schools that were present at the programme.

The guest lecturer, Dr Oluremi Olaleye from the University of Lagos, who spoke on the topic, “21st Century Approach To Academic Excellence” educated the students on the dangers in examination malpractices, and advised parent not to encourage their children to go into the act.

The guest lecturer, who was represented by Mr. Jamiu Olu Jaji also appealed to governments at levels to find a lasting solution to the poor state of education in the country.

According to him, presently we have an official website for examination malpractices, where students get ‘expo’ for their examinations, adding that those in charge of education are helpless in this regard.

Stressing on the theme, he opined that reward system is very poor in this part of the world, and that parents reward their children with phones and laptops instead of things that will add values to their lives.

In a related development, he said schools are today devoid of good characters, which contribute to immorality among the students.

He appealed to the government to give teachers their dues, saying that without this Nigeria might not progress.

He concluded his lecture on the fact that students must have essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity and good communication and choose the right model amongst others.

The programme also availed the students of an opportunity to ask questions from their representatives and get feedbacks on the motions and law passed on the floor of the House of Representatives that would improve education in Nigeria.

The dignitaries at the programme include, Hon. Nurudeen Olaitan Akinwunmi representing Ifako-Ijaiye federal constituency, APC party leader Otunba Tayo Oyemade, members of Lagos House of Assembly, Hon. Lanre Oshun, Hon. Oladele Adekanye, Executive Chairman of Mainland local government, Hon. Omolola Essien, Yaba LCDA chairman, Kayode Omiyale and principals of schools in Mainland.
