The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, Alhassan Gani, has expressed concerns over the low number of newly admitted female students into the institution.

Gani, a professor, stated this on Monday during the matriculation of 3,057 students of the university for the 2019/2020 academic session.

Describing female enrolment at the university, in the current academic year, as one of the lowest ever, he said, “Over 10,000 candidates applied for admission into the university, but we only admitted according to our carrying capacity.

“We are matriculating a total of 3,057 students, who successfully completed their registration. They comprise 2,132 male students and 925 female students.”

“Looking at these figures, you can understand that female enrolment is still poor when compared to the opposite sex. May I therefore use this opportunity to advocate for girl-child education by calling on the Federal, State and Local Governments to do more towards supporting female education.”

The vice-chancellor gave a breakdown of the number of matriculating students for each faculty of the university as follows: Faculty of Agriculture, 147 students; Faculty of Education, 726 students; Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, 1,445 students and the Faculty of Science, 739 Students.”

He gave the assurance that the management of the institution under his leadership would continue to sustain and improve efforts aimed at providing quality education to all its candidates.

He noted that the increase in the number of candidates who sought admission to the institution showed that the university had become an institution of first choice and this was due to the “quality of teachers, graduates and the conducive environment” for which it had come to be known.
