Police arrests NANS Vice President

Officers of the Nigeria Police on Monday evening arrested the Vice President, National Affairs of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr Chidi Ilogede.

The arrest was allegedly connected to agitations for the release of some students of Madonna University, Okija that were detained about six months ago.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, NANS National President, Danielson Bamidele said the officers of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tactical Squad arrested Mr Ilogede in Enugu.

“The arrest was orchestrated by the management of the Madonna University who for 6 months have detained students of the University in prison custody over students peaceful protest demanding for better welfare conditions,” he said.

“As a matter of urgency, the NANS leadership has commenced immediate effort in ensuring the immediate and unconditional release of the NANS VP National and students of Madonna University that were remanded in prison custody since 6 months ago.”

“As at the last contact, we were informed that the IGP Tactical Police squad that effected the arrest of Com Chidi Ilogede are currently transporting him to the Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja, by road.”

He said he apex students’ would mobilising its members around neighbouring states to the Federal Capital Territory to seek the release of the VP.

“The NANS leadership is hereby relocating to the Police Headquarters in Abuja awaiting the arrival of the IGP Tactical Squad Team and our VP National in their custody. Comrades in Abuja and environs are hereby invited to join the NANS leadership in demanding for the VP’s unconditional release.”

“While this interface is ongoing, we appeal for restraint on the part of Nigerian students over this very provoking arrest.”

Details of the arrest could not be immediately confirmed by the police as Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba was not responding to text message sent to his mobile number not returning calls.
