PhD holder, historian: Meet the new NYSC DG, Shuaibu Ibrahim

Last Friday, the Nigerian federal government announced the appointment of Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim as the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Mr Ibrahim, is replacing Suleiman Kazaure, a Major General who was on the saddle since 18th April, 2016 as the NYSC DG.

Educational administrator and soldier

Until the new appointment, he was the pioneer Registrar of Nigeria Army University Biu, Borno State.

Born on 13th July, 1967, Mr Ibrahim is a graduate of the University of Jos. He attended the Nigeria Army Education Corps (NAEC) young officer course in 1994, infantry (INF) young officer course 1996, Training Development Advisers course (TDA) 2004 and NAEC officer’s executive management course 5/2013.

PhD holder

He holds a doctorate degree (PhD) in History from the University of Abuja, which he earned in 2007.

His research area was centered on economic and military history as well as intergroup relation.

At some point in time, he headed various sections of the Nigerian military. He is a former Research Officer at the Institute of Army Education (IAE); military assistant to Director General of NYSC 1996- 1999; staff officer, military history at the National Defence College (NDC) from 2004 to 2009.

He was also senior instructor, Nigeria Army School of Education between 2009 and 2011; staff officer I books resources procurement, Headquarters Nigeria Army Education Corps between 2011 and 2012; and Commandant Command Secondary School, Suleja between 2012 and 2014.

He had also headed the Department of History and War at the Nigeria Defence Academy.

Professional to the core

Mr Ibrahim, is a professional member of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (MTRCN), Exam Ethics Marshal International.

He is a member of the Editorial Board, Ibom Journal History, University of Uyo; and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of History and Military Studies, Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna.

He has authored publications of chapters of reputable of academic journals.

In the course of his military career’s he has to received several awards, including Forces Serving Star (FSS), Meritorious service star (MSS) and distinguish service star (DSS).

Other special recognition he received are Chief of Army Staff Award as the overall best participant for 2013 NAEC Executive management course.

With the latest appointment at the NYSC, he has the task of improving and sustaining reforming within the 48-year-old compulsory youth service scheme.
