Over 10,000 projects executed across 226 tertiary institutions – TETFund

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Kashim Ibrahim-Iman has said that since its inception in 2001, it has impacted positively on 226 tertiary institutions across the country through the funding and sponsorship of over 10, 000 projects apart from special grants, researches and laboratories.

Alhaji Ibrahim-Iman disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni at the Government House in Damaturu, the state’s capital.

In his words: “I am here on a working visit to your state to Inspect completed and ongoing projects in 6 Federal and state owned tertiary institutions in Yobe state.”

“The TETfund was established by the National Assembly Act in 2011 and since it’s inception it has executed over 10 thousand projects across the country”.

“In Yobe state we have interventions in 6 tertiary institutions which includes Federal University Gashua, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Federal College of Education, Potiskum, Yobe State Polytechnic Geidam, Yobe State University, Damaturu”.

“Last year in Yobe state alone, the TETFund expended N5 billion on critical projects across the tertiary institutions and ithis year the Fund is to spend N8 billion in Yobe state”, Ibrahim-Imam said.

In his remark, the Yobe state Governor who thanked the Chairman and his Board Members for their visit to his state, noted that the state is in serious need of interventions from TETFund.

He said, “due to the destructions caused by the decade long Boko Haram insurgency. I have declared a state of emergency in the education sector. Borno and Yobe are educationally backward”.

“it is further worsen by the insurgency that is why we are massively investing in education to bridge the gap. We therefore call for more intervention from your Fund”, Buni said.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Yobe State University, Professor Mala Daura said “the University has benefited over 20 projects from 2006 to date and has spent N3.5 billion in critical infrastructures, training, scholarships, research grants, library development among others”

He said the university which was established in 2006 have witness a lot transformation but however the decade long insurgency have affected the school, Corona Viirus has also had it toll on the academic activities of the school,.

The VC added that the University need more intervention from the TETFund for the establishment for the Faculty of Agriculture with 4 programme,, construction of student hostels and the Yobe State Teaching Hospital for the take off of medicine and health program.

Responding, the TETFund Chairman assured the university that the Board of Trustees has budgeted bN800 million for the university last year and N905 million budgeted for the year 2021. In the sum of N1 billion to rebuild the destroyed Yobe State Polytechnic, Geidam.

While at the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, the Rector of the institution, Dr Usman Kallamu who was represented by deputy Rector Administration, Dr Mohammed Shuwama said “the institution has benefited a lot from the TETFund interventions which includes 13 departmental complex, renovation and construction of hostels”.

“33 KVA line electricity extension to the polytechnic, 1 Solar borehole, general office equipment, computer and internrnet facilities and laboratory, workshop equipment”.

“Others includes library interventions in terms of assorted textbooks, journals, reference materials over 30,000 volume, research trsiining of 125 both MSC and Phd levels workshop to 667 staff, and conference for both academic and non academic staff totaling 1,226”.

“From 2011 to date, over N3.9 billion has been allocated to the polytechnic and it was well utilized. This includes high impact intervention of N1 billion projects, which when completed would accommodate school of sciences and Technology, Environmental studies and 250 capacity twin lecture theaters”, Kallamu said.

The Rector further explained that the polytechnic was still in need of classrooms, laboratories, workshops and laboratory equipment, female hostels and fencing, , drawing studio and equipment for Environmental studies, upgrade of library utility vehicles, as well solar lightening to classroom and laboratories.
