A non-governmental organisation, Highfliers Youth Initiative (HYI), has successfully launched a computer programming club in public secondary schools in Osun State.

Its management told EduCeleb.com that the initiative was towards complementing the efforts of the government in its computer literacy programmes for students.

Named “Premier Coders’ Club,” the HYI’s Executive Director, Mr. Abdulganiyy Ajayi, said that the motive was to prepare the younger generation for a technology-driven future, saying the club is being run as an extracurricular programme in each of the selected schools across the state’s educational zones.

Mr Ajayi added that the initiative was targeted at empowering students to lead digital transformation in their schools by equipping them with the right technical skills, resources, and commitment to impactful projects.

Ajayi, a graduate of Computer Engineering said; “We work with the belief that anybody, irrespective of background, can thrive well in the global economy if equipped with the right skills and exposure.”

Also speaking about the initiative, the Programme Director, Mr Abdulazeez Mikahil, said the club uses a project-based learning approach which brings excitement into learning.

In his words, “We are currently running a pilot with six schools, drawn from each of the six education zones of the state. The participating schools include Osogbo Government High School, Osogbo; School of Science, Ikirun; Ogedengbe Science High School, Ilesa; Agbonran School of Science, Ede; Unity High School, Ikire; and Science High School, Ile-Ife. We plan to expand to other schools from the next academic session.”

The NGO said it hopes to expand the number of beneficiaries of the initiative in the nearest future.
