The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Professor Olusegun Ajiboye has revealed that majority of private school teachers are not qualified to teach in schools.

He based this on a survey conducted by the Council within Southwest Nigeria where over 90 percent of teachers involved did not have the minimum professional requirement to teach.

The survey done through a consulting firm revealed that private school prioritise profit over quality.

“We discovered that ninety-something percent of the teachers are not even qualified because our people focus more on the commercialisation of education. They want to make gains.”

Ajiboye who was the Guest Speaker at the a virtual Teachers’ Day lecture organised by EduCeleb and Edfort Consulting on Saturday appealed to state governments to do the right thing.

EduCeleb.com understands that state governments are directly responsible for registering and approving such schools for operations.

This is as education belongs to the concurrent legislative list and majority of primary and secondary schools in the country are regulated by states.

“The state government that are registering them should ensure that they have qualified teachers on thier nominal role before they are registered.

“Let us check who is teaching in their programmes before they are registered.”
