Students at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) may now heave a sigh of relief even as their school remains shut as the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to 24 of the 29 courses for which that was sought. But funding is still largely a challenge in the institution jointly owned by both Oyo and Osun State Governments.

Recall that lecturers in the institution had embarked on a two week warning strike during which they took the streets of Osogbo, the Osun State capital last Friday to protest alleged neglect of the school. The strike, which led the disruption of the Second Semester Examinations at LAUTECH is yet to end.

During the protest, the lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warned both proprietors of the school with various inscriptions such as “Oyo/Osun, Don’t Play Politics with the Lives of Our Students,” and “Do Not Kill the Best State University in Nigeria.’’

The Coordinator of Akure Zone of ASUU, Professor Alex Odiyi who led protesters had highlighted issues such as the non-payment of salaries and arrear, the non-funding of the University aside the owners reneging from the Memorandum of Agreement signed with the union before the last strike was called off.

Major courses accredited

The news of the full accreditation granted to 24 major courses may just provide succour to the alleged poor conditions of the University, which sometimes touts itself as the best state university in Nigeria.

This is going by the information made available to EduCeleb.com by the Head of Public and Alumni Relations Unit at the institution, Lekan Fadeyi on Friday in Ogbomosho.

Mr Fadeyi noted that while five other courses got partial accreditation, none of the courses examined by the NUC visiting panels lost its accreditation.

In his words, “The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to not fewer than twenty four out of the twenty nine academic programmes which its representatives came to re-examine at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), between May and June, 2018. It also gave interim nod to the remaining five others. None of the courses was denied accreditation.”

He made reference to a letter from the Commission signed by its Executive Secretary, Abubakar Rasheed in which the university regulatory body granted the said courses accreditation valid for five years.

Among the courses granted full accreditation include Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Physiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Accounting, Marketing, Transport Management, Agriculture and Food Science. Others are, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Food Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Others are Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Mathematics, Pure and Applied Biology, and Pure and Applied Chemistry.
