LASU to convoke 26,637 graduating students in 22nd Ceremonies

The Lagos State University (LASU) is set to convoke 26,637 graduating students in the 22nd edition of the ceremonies.

This is according to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Olanrewaju Fagbohun at a press conference held on the university campus in Ojo, Lagos.

Professor Fagbohun disclosed that the Convocation Ceremonies for the award of diplomas, and degrees to the deserving graduating students would hold on 23rd and 24th May, 2018.

He explained that the university produced such a large number of graduates for the academic session because graduating students on its External System Programme, which was closed in 2017, were included.

Of the students, 201 were diploma students, 21,481 were of the First Degree programme at both part-time and full-time while 4,955 were postgraduate degree students whose results have been approved by the University’s Senate.

Giving numerical details about the class of degrees the graduating students had the Vice Chancellor said thus:

“For the diploma level, two graduates made a distinction, 39 made upper credit, 147 finished with lower credit while 13 ended with pass division.

“For the first degree, 26 had First Class Honours, 1,084 students bagged Second Class Upper Division, 17,323 students finished in the Second Class Lower Division, 2,940 Third Class Honours and 108 finished with a pass.

He added that at the postgraduate level, the university would award postgraduate diploma on 1,589, academic master’s degree on 299 students and professional masters’ degree on 3,022 while 45 would be awarded the doctoral degree.

The VC also told newsmen that the university awarded scholarships to 220 undergraduates who finished the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 academic sessions with a CGPA of 4.5 and above.

On the achievements of the University within the year, the law professor noted that LASU was ranked first among first generations of state universities in Nigeria by the National Universities Commission.

EduCeleb.com recalls that the NUC made public its first ranking of universities in Nigeria known as the Open Education Resource (OER) ranking. That had the Federal University of Technology, Owerri leading 49 other universities listed in the maiden OER Ranking released in January.

The successful accreditation of the LASU Open Distance Learning and Research Institute (LASU-ODLRI) by the NUC was also mentioned. The VC said that applications for admissions for the first set of students would be announced soon.

Within the year, the university collaborated with numerous tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria to deepen academic research and learning.

Among such were with the Nigerian Air force in the areas of aerospace engineering, aerospace and satellite corporation, artificial intelligence and robotics as well as weather simulation systems.

There is also one with the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta through which sandwich programmes of the Faculty of Education degree programme would be held.

Other partnerships are with London Southbank University, London, the University of Georgia, the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana and the Technical University of Frieburg, Germany.

The VC also informed journalists that a delegation from the African Union was on the campus to see to the possibility of naming LASU as an African centre of excellence in fisheries and aquaculture.

Its collaboration with the NUC saw to the successful organisation of the National Workshop on Research Grant Writing and Administration which attracted faculty members from over twelve countries.

In terms of infrastructure, Fagbohun said the Faculty of Dentistry Research and Service Centre had been completed and furnished with the state of the art equipment. He said the centre would complement the dental facility at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

Also is the renovation and rehabilitation of students’ hostel and other buildings at the LASU College of Medicine and the resuscitation of the LASUCOM Students’ Cafeteria.

The press event was also used to unveil the newly composed anthem of LASU to the admiration of the audience. Fagbohun said the anthem would further entrench the essence and value of the university in the heart of its staff and students.

In a build up to the convocation, the finals of the Convocation Cup for Staff would hold at the Sports Centre on 18th May along with Jumat Service later same day at the University Mosque.

On 20th May, the Special Thanksgiving Service would be held at the University Chapel. A day after, the Coconut Breaking Festival as well as Command Performance and Convocation Play would be displayed.

The Convocation Lecture titled “Role of Tertiary Education in Promoting Social Cohesion and Peace: Opportunities and Challenges for Nigeria” would be delivered by Professor Abubakar Adams Rasheed of the NUC. Former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo is expected to chair the lecture which holds on 22nd May.
