LASU to host Former UK foreign Minister Chalker in August

A former Minister of State at the United Kingdom Foreign Office, Baroness Lynda Chalker would be at the Lagos State University (LASU) this August to address Nigerian political and business leaders.

LASU is also scheduled to hold the maiden edition of a special annual awards tagged the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Spirit of Africa Awards and its Second Distinguished Lecture.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Olanrewaju Fagbohun disclosed these at a press briefing on Tuesday at the University’s campus in Ojo, Lagos.

According to him, the three events are in line with the management’s commitment to have “constant and robust engagements with the town; with champions of industry, the intelligentsia, diplomatic Corps, government and civil society for the mutual benefit of the University and the larger society.”

EduCeleb.com learnt that Ms Chalker would be speaking on the topic, “Africa in a Competitive World, Development and Business.”

Professor Fagbohun had told newsmen that he was confident that based on her experience with African matters, she would be able to deliver it well.

Chalker owns a consulting firm called Africa Matters Limited and is a highly respected voice in global politics and business. She would be in LASU on 15th August, 2018 to share her wealth of knowledge about the given topic.

On the Spirit of Africa Awards, Fagbohun said it was named after former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a means of contributing to the renaissance of the African Continent.

“Asiwaju Tinubu has long been a champion of the progressive cause in Nigeria and is a committed pan-Africanist. His advocacy for anti-poverty initiatives and for ending all forms of ethnic and religious bias in Nigeria is well known. It is our fervent belief that the institutionalisation of the Spirit of Africa Awards will contribute to the spread of knowledge and the pursuit of excellence on the African Continent,” he said.

Fagbohun added that the awardees would be selected by a team of competent and respectable panel of judges headed by former Consul General of American Consulate in Lagos, Walter Carrington.

The event is billed to hold at the University’s Main Auditorium on Thursday, 27th September, 2018.

Meanwhile, personalities expected at the Second Distinguished Lecture would be discussing the theme, “Life Skills Education for Employment and Entrepreneurship Learning in the 21st Century.”

This lecture would feature Mrs Dan-Faparusi Ogugua Enitan Anne, Mrs Joke Jacobs, and Mr Segun Arinze.

The First Lady of Lagos, Mrs Bolanle Ambode is expected to deliver the keynote speech at this very important event which holds on Tuesday, 28th August, 2018 on the university campus.
