Lagos students shine in national JETS competition

Students in Lagos State have emerged as one of the best states in the Federation among others at the year 2020 National Junior Engineers, Technicians, and Scientists, (JETS) competitions.

The State team won 11 Trophies and 14 Medals; which were the star Trophies- 1st Position National Theme Project, 1st and 3rd Position in Biology, Best Female JETS. It also won 2nd positions in Free Choice Project (Primary), Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics Competition among others.

The Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo commended the team for making the State proud.

A statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, ‘Kayode Abayomi revealed that she said this upon receiving the news of the Lagos Team victory, adding that just last year; Lagos State Students attained a similar feat in the same competition.

Mrs Adefisayo noted that students of Lagos State Schools, both Private and Public have been participating and recording successes in various competitions over the years which is a testament to the improved teaching and learning outcomes in all Schools across the State.

In her words, “the competition has laid a solid foundation for science development in Nigeria and one encouraging trend observed was that the quality of performance of the schools had been on the increase since inception of the competition.”

She urged the students to study harder to win more trophies at other National and International competitions.

While felicitating with the team, she encouraged the students and their teachers that she was not comfortable with the second and third positions in other categories because the Centre of Excellence which Lagos State is could not afford to trail behind any other State and charged them to redouble their efforts.

The students who were motivated by the Honourable Commissioner, promised not to relent on their efforts as they are focused towards achieving greater heights that will bring glory to Lagos State and the Nation in the area of scientific discoveries and technological inventions in tandem with the vision of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for a Greater Lagos.

The National JETS competition is an annual competition aimed at popularizing the teaching and learning of Science and Technology in Schools and to expose the young talented, intelligent scientists and technologists to the world beyond their locality.

The competition involved all the thirty-six states and FCT of the federation who keenly contested in written/quiz competitions in Biology, Mathematics, Basic Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Basic Science, Agricultural Science, Computer Science and Project Exhibitions during the competition.

The Theme of this year’s annual National JETS competition was “Science, Technology and Innovations; A Panacea for Insecurity in Nigeria” which was organized by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with all the State Ministries of Education and the Federal Capital Territory (FTC), Abuja.
