Kaduna State University is developing its own online Learning Management System.

This is as part of efforts to limit third party control that is possible in depending on an existing LMS.

Head of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at KASU, Muazu Idris disclosed this on Wednesday while participating in the Education Discourse organised by EduCeleb.

In his words, “We are presently trying to develop an online learning management system. The online learning management system will be localised and the entire control will be by the university unlike Zoom that is more of a third party application that is subscribed to.”

“My university considers developing in-house app to handle that because if you look at the cost of subscription, it is something that you may not be able to sustain over a long period of time.”

On the successes recorded so far in its usage, Idris noted that university teachers can now reach their students online irrespective of where they are.

This has further improved access to learning and research.

He also disclosed that his office had made recommendations to the Kaduna State Government to partner with stakeholders to address the challenge of access.

Through this, each student would have a laptop or palmtop to use in accessing e-learning platforms.

He said such collaboration in providing data bandwidths could be emulated from what was obtainable in other countries like South Africa and Kenya.

In these countries, telecommunication companies had given out large quantity of data to students for free to study during this period. In some other cases, universities even purchased laptops for students that they may pay later in instalments.

At the Education Discourse attended by dozens of academics and education professionals, experts observed that Nigeria is lagging behind in the global stage in terms of promoting access to online learning as the right infrastructure are not in place.
