The management of the Federal Government College (FGC), Odogbolu, Ogun State, has suspended 20 Senior School 3 students of the school over suspected debauchery.

A top official of the school management who wouldn’t want to be named told EduCeleb.com on Saturday that the suspended students were caught last weekend attempting to engage in an act contrary to the moral standard the school represents. They were all among the boarding students there.

The students, who are all expected to write the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) early next year, had been found culpable of conspiring to break into the female hostel in the school.

Among them are ten male and ten female students. We are not naming them due to the sensitivity of the situation.

Disciplinary panel found them guilty

EduCeleb.com learnt that prior to their indefinite suspension, the affected students had faced a disciplinary panel set up by the school’s principal, Mrs A.N. Bassey-Duke. The panel was able to establish that the students indeed conspired to do the act.

Our source said that a group of boys allegedly hatched the plan of sneaking into girls’ hostel. Hostel staff reportedly caught them while they attempted jumping over the fence of the hostel in the wee hours of the night. The panel established that some SS3 girls conspired with the boys in the process. The twenty of them faced the music.

This is not the first time the school would show a disciplinary stance against erring students under Bassey-Duke’s leadership.

The management disallowed some students from writing their Physics SSCE paper last session over their recalcitrance to conform with school sanctioned hairstyles.

Parents commend school management

Meanwhile, parents have commended the school management for its continued role in upholding discipline.

A parent who gave his name as Engineer Taiwo told EduCeleb.com that he was in total support of the action of the management leadership. He cited how the suspended students could have turned out as bad influence to others.

“The staff of the school are our children’s parents when we are not there. They have shown that children who decide to be of bad character have no place among others.”

Another parent who was also on visitation to the school warned his child against joining bad company. He later told EduCeleb.com that if he were in the management’s shoes, he would have expelled the students rather than suspend them.

Suspended students’ fate hang in the balance

The fate of the affected students now hang in the balance. We asked a top school official of the implications of the situation for the students. The official emphasised that the management holds the prerogative to determine whether or not the suspension would be lifted any time soon.

In past instances of boarding students’ misbehavior being punished, such students were either reabsorbed as day students or totally expelled from school, depending on the severity of their offences.
