The Rector of Kaduna Polytechnic, Idris Bugaje, has faulted the plan to scrap the Almajiri system of education in the northern part of Nigeria.

Bugaje, a professor, said it would be impossible for the system to be scrapped in the region but it should rather be reformed.

Professor Bugaje said this at the closing ceremony of a Capacity Building Workshop for Technical and Vocational Teachers in Kaduna.

“Laws were being made to scrap Almajiri system, but it is impossible, because this system of education has been around for over a thousand years. Rather, we should look for a way to improve the system,’’ he said.

He said anybody who attempted to scrap the system would fail.

Bugaje condemned street begging, especially amongst the youths and called for the inclusion of skills acquisition in the curriculum of the Almajiri system of education.

The Assistant Director Inspectorate Department, Katsina State Science and Technology Education Board, Lawal Yusuf Yajigiri said, street begging in the northern part of Nigeria was worrisome, hence the need for government to invest in the Almajiri system of education.

More than half of Nigeria’s over 10.1 million out of school children are from Northern Nigeria.
