Dominion University seeks mentorship from UI

Newly established Dominion University (DU), Ibadan has formally approached the management of the University of Ibadan (UI) for mentoring for the growth of the University within a short time.

At a courtesy call on the UI Vice-Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, in his office on Tuesday, 7th May, 2019 by the Chancellor of the university, Taiwo Adelakun, he told the Vice-Chancellor that ”we are on a pursuit of a mandate, saying “we need any assistance we can get from UI at this time”.

Adelakun, a bishop, specifically sought assistance from UI in such areas as adjunct staff, students for the approved University and Library resources.

“You will assist us so that our University can benefit from your well-resourced Library,” Mr Adelakun said.

The project, according to him, was embarked on 13 years ago, disclosing that “God gave me the vision when I observed the rot in our tertiary education.”

Olayinka in his response said, “UI is committed to collaborating with other Universities to improve the quality of education”.

He praised the Chancellor for his motivation to establishing the University to complement the roles of the public Universities for an improved access to higher education.

“UI like other public Universities are oversubscribed for undergraduate admission. This explains why we have pegged our admission population to 3,500 or 4,000,” the VC disclosed.

Olayinka noted that UI has mentored and is still mentoring many Universities.

He promised the Chancellor that the UI will support the new University, stressing that “because of our track record many Universities will want us to mentor them.”

The Chancellor of DU, Ibadan used the occasion to announce the appointment of Prof. Adedoyin Soyibo, a renowned economist and former Dean, Faculty of the Social Sciences at the UI as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the new institution.

Bishop Adelakun, was accompanied on the visit by his wife, Mrs Dolapo Adelakun, DU VC, Soyibo and members of the board of trustees including Prof. Francis Egbokhare of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages at UI, while the Principal Officers and senior management staff of the University of Ibadan joined the VC to receive the DU team.
