Coronavirus: WAEC limits public services to online

As part of the global containment response to the spread of Coronavirus pandemic, the West African Examinations Council in Nigeria has announced that henceforth, it would be shutting its doors to the public.

This is coming days after it indefinitely postponed the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) meant to begin in April.

A statement issued by the WAEC head of Nigeria office Mr Patrick Areghan, on Monday notified stakeholders that the arrangement takes effect from Tuesday, 24th March, 2020.

A copy of the statement made available to EduCeleb.com indicates that the Council would only attend to candidates online while only essential staff would be physically on duty in its offices across the nation.

In the light of the global Corona Virus pandemic (COVID-19), The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria has followed international protocols, including the recommended health and safety measures by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for social distancing and keeping the work environment safe for staff and stakeholders.

In addition to steps already taken, the Council has decided to take the following extra measures to forestall the spread of the disease:

Visitors will not be allowed into the Councils offices nationwide, beginning from tomorrow, March 24, 2020. The general public is advised to take advantage of available online channels for enquiries, etc;

Some staff have been placed on essential duties to accommodate schools registering candidates for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020.
