Four bills to establish new federal tertiary institutions in Oyo town have scaled first reading on the floor of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.

A member representing Orelope/Irepo/Olorunsogo federal constituency in the House, Olumide Ojerinde, presented bills for the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture, Igboho, Oyo State; the Federal Polytechnic, Kishi, Oyo State; and the Federal College of Education, Igbeti, Oyo State.

Another bill seeks to establish the Federal Medical Centre, Igboho, Oyo, Oyo State before the House.

Ojerinde said that he sponsored the bills out of his concerns for the constituency and its people.

He claimed that his constituency lacked federal presence which he believed had impeded growth and development of the area.

“The neglect of my constituency over the years has made our people suffer untold hardship in accessing health care and higher education. My constituents usually resort to embarking on the journey of several kilometres, even outside Oyo state to access health care and quality education”, he said.

EduCeleb.com reports that already, Oyo town hosts Nigeria’s first and only Federal College of Special Education, the Federal School of Statistics, aside many federal owned tertiary institutions within Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Ibadan is less than 20 kilometres from the ancient Oyo town.
