A newly created portal on the Lagos State University (LASU) website now gives students the opportunity to assess their lecturers.

Prior to this development, there appears to be no other Nigerian public or private university that allows students to anonymously assess the teaching experience, rate their lecturers or give feedbacks to the University Authority online.

But unlike what is obtainable in other universities around the world with similar provisions, EduCeleb.com observed that the assessments are not publicly available after the students do them as it is directly stored on the university management database.

This also means that a visitor to the website would not likely see the assessments against each lecturer’s profile page.

The LASU management said it hoped to help lecturers improve in their course delivery in the process.

Director, Quality Assurance Committee of the institution, Rafiu Okuneye noted that the new system was being introduced to students across faculties to ensure its appropriate utilisation.

Okuneye, a professor of Health Education heads the committee overseeing the project.

Steps to follow

Students would have to first visit the university’s website at www.lasu.edu.ng.

On the home page, they would hover on “students services”, which would show a drop down menu.

At the end of the menu is “Teaching Evaluation”, which they could click on to rate their university teachers and rate the quality of their teaching.

A 29 item questionnaire would be displayed on the screen for the student to fill and choose among available options where applicable.

At the end of the feedback session, students are required to answer the question: “In what area do you want improvement?”

Okuneye revealed that the system is designed in such a way that false or inaccurate feedbacks are detected to prevent abuse by the students.
