ASUU Strike: Seven students die, others injured in fatal motor accident

Seven students of the University of Maiduguri have died in a fatal motor accident along Damaturu Road on Tuesday, 20th November, 2018.

They were returning to their homes following the nearly three-week old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

EduCeleb.com learnt that the students were around Damaturu on their way to Gombe when the accident that took their lives and left eleven other co-passengers with various degrees of injuries happened.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident an headon collision between the bus conveying the students and another vehicle promising to provide official details later.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAID, Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi has commiserated with the families of the deceased.

A statement from his Personal Assistant on the New Media, Mukhtar Jada sent to our correspondent indicated that the VC “commiserates with Gombe state Government and in particular families of UNIMAID students who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident along Damaturu yesterday.”

Professor Njodi “prayed for the souls of the deceased to have eternal rest and their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

On his part, the President of university’s Students’ Union Government, Farouq Muhammad Ahmad said he felt saddened by the development.

He spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Tasi’u Hassan who  stated that his office “receives with sadness, the terrible news of the ghastly motor accident that claimed the lives and injured many UNIMAID Students on their way back to Gombe.”

“On behalf of himself, his cabinets and the entire Students of the University, the President extends his sincere condolences to the families, management staff of the University, Gombe state government, friends and colleagues of the victims.

“Losing young and vibrant students at this time is not our wish, but, we can’t do otherwise, as death is the end of every mortal,” Mr Hassan told EduCeleb.com.

“As we mourn our colleagues whose lives were suddenly taken in the unbelievable and horrendous accident, we equally sympathize with the families and friends of the injured ones,” he concluded.

The identities of all the students involved are yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
