The meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has been adjourned till Thursday, 7th February, 2019.

This meeting, which ended late in the evening is the 9th time between the striking University teachers and officials of the Nigerian government. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige on whose behest this latest meeting was called said it was to resolve the industrial action which has continued for almost three months.

EduCeleb.com recalls that the lecturers proceeded on strike on 4th November, 2018, in protest of the poor state of infrastructure and staff welfarism in the schools.

Their focus has been on the failure of government to fulfil its 2013 agreement with ASUU to revitalise Nigerian universities by releasing 1.3 trillion naira for that. While the government had so far released barely 220 billion naira prior to the strike, it expressed commitment by releasing additional funds while this strike had lasted. But ASUU has denied receipt of such funds.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the meeting, the labour minister as well as the ASUU President noted that they are making progress.
