New ABSU VC promises to pay salary arrears

The vice chancellor of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu, has assured staff that he will put in his best to maximise every available resources to clear-up salary arrears owed to them.

The VC gave the assurance when the National Executives SSANU paid him a courtesy visit.

Ogbulu, while thanking the SSANU executives, said the institution was in session today despite the salary arrears owed workers occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic because of the massive support of the unions to the management. He further stressed his promise to pay all earned allowances, adding that modalities to address all issues of promotion has been put in place.

On the SSANU-ABSU Quadrennial Congress Elections, Ogbulu said that, just as the election that saw his emergence as the 8th substantive vice-chancellor went smoothly and seamlessly, so will the election for the new executive of SSANU be.

He wished all the contestants a successful and smooth election.

The vice-chancellor said he was confident that whoever emerges as the chairman will work together with the management for the progress of the university.

Earlier the SSANU Deputy National Chairman, Dr Lekan Ador, while congratulating the vice-chancellor on his emergence said the national leadership is in the university to witness and make sure that the SSANU-ABSU election is done properly.

Ador disclosed that the union has a way of transiting, saying the tenure of every leadership was five years and that everything had been put in place for the election, pointing out that all eligible voters had been screened and ready to vote. He pleaded for adequate security during and after the election and thanked the VC for giving the union an enabling environment.

The SSANU chief expressed the union’s confidence in the management in payment of salary arrears which he pleaded for the vice chancellor to look into, just as other welfare-related issues of the staff.

He said that he was hopeful that their visit would yield fruit in the welfare of their members.
