Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has disclosed that his government has earmarked the sum of N1.8 billion this December for the commencement of the offsetting of arrears of salaries owed to workers in some parastatals.

He was reacting to recent threats by teachers in the state to go on strike over their 15-month unpaid salary arrears.

The governor was on a radio program on BCA Radio Umuahia on Friday.

Some of state workers affected include staff of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), the Abia State Polytechnic, the Abia College of Education Arochukwu, the College of Health, Aba and the Secondary Education Management Board.

According to Governor Ikpeazu, “They will get between two and three months this December. We will continue from January.

“Let me make it clear that these workers must be prepared to present themselves for verification and authentication. The funds we have provided are for real workers and not ghost workers.

“I will hold the Heads of Finance and Accounts of these institutions personally responsible for the proper management of these funds.”
